Lesson 11: Adverbs of Place: Stative & Dynamic pairs [PART 4]

OPP vs. OPPE 

opp (up, upstairs) - movement from/to a place

  • Jeg står opp og lager mat. - I get up and cook.
  • Vi vil komme opp og drikke noe sammen. We will come up and drink something together



oppe (up, upstairs) - static position

  • Han liker å være (seint) oppe He likes to stay up (long)
  • Klærene/Telefonen ligger oppe The clothes/telephone is located up there.


UT vs. UTE

ut (out, outside) - movement from/to a place

  • Skal vi gå ut og leke? - Shall we go out and play?
  • Vi flyttet ut We moved out
  • Barna liker å gå ut. - The children like to go out



ute (out, outside, outdoors) - static position

  • Hun er ofte ute og hjemme – She is often at home and abroad
  • Skal vi sitte ute? – Shall we sit outside?
  • Hun er ute og tenker på ham. - She is outside and thinking about him



BORT vs. BORTE

bort (away, booked) - movement from/to a place

  • Hun går bort - She walks away
  • Hun reiser bort til England – She travels away to England


borte (away, over there) - static position

  • Det ligger der borte - It is located (lies) there
  • Hun er der borte She's over there
  • Han er borte fra jobben/skolen/hjemme He is away from the job/school/home
  • Jeg gikk på restauranten men alle billeter var borte I went to cinema but all tickets were sold out




*VEKK vs. VEKK

vekk (=bort) - movement from/to a place

  • Kom deg vekk! get lost, go away
  • Jeg reiser vekk/bort på ferieI travel away for holidays

vekk (=borte) - static position

  • Jeg er vekk/borte på ferie til neste uke. - I'm away on vacation until next week.


* You can use either vekk or bort(e)



dit/ der & hit / her combined with other adverbs appears before them


For example:
  • Jeg kommer dit ut I am coming out there
  • Hun går hit opp  She goes up here.


  • Han er der nede. – He is down there
  • De bor der oppeThey live up there
  • Det ligger her oppe  - It lies (is located) up here
  • Dere er her inneThey are in here.



exception: inn hit
  • Vi må kjøre inn hit - We must drive in here.
  • Du må komme inn hitYou must come in here.
