Lesson 3b: asking to repeat etc.

SPEAKING A LANGUAGE (extra for previous lesson)

Jeg forstår ikke så mye norsk = I understand not so much Norwegian.

Jeg forstår (e.g. norsk) ganske bra
= I understand (Norwegian) quite well

Jeg forstår litt
= I understand a little

Jeg snakker litt norsk
= I speak little Norwegian



Du er (veldig) god i norsk = You are very good in Norwegian [ Is not common to say: (veldig) bra I norsk]

Du er (ganske) flink  i norsk = You are (quite) clever in Norwegian

Du snakker så godt norsk!
= You speak Norwegian (so) well!



DIDN’T UNDERSTAND?

 Unnskyld, jeg forstår ikke hva du sier = Sorry, I do not understand what you are saying.

Hva sier du? Er det sant?
 – What do you sayIs it true?

Å ja, s
ier du det? – Oh really, is that so?

Nå forstår jeg
 = now I understand


Unnskyld, kan du gjenta? = Sorry, can you repeat?

Kan du si det en gang til? = Can you say that one more time?

Hva sa du? – What did you say?

Jeg forstår ikke, hva mener du? = I do not understand, what do you mean?

Jeg forstår ikke, hva betyr det? = I do not understand, what does it mean?

Hva betyr “X”? = What means “X”?
Det betyr… = It means…


Hva heter det på norsk? = How do you say ... in Norwegian? (What's that called in Norwegian?)

          Hva heter ... på norsk? - How do you say ... in Norwegian? (What's that called in Norwegian?)

Hva heter “English” på norsk?
= What is English called in Norwegian (i.e. how to say)

Det heter “engelsk”
= It’s called “engelsk” (i.e. in Norwegian we say “engelsk”)



SNAKKER

Vennligst snakk saktere = Please speak slower (polite way of saying)

Snakk sakte! 
= speak slowly

Hvordan sier man dette/det på norsk? = How do you say this in Norwegian?

Snakker du norsk? - Do you speak Norwegian?

Du snakker engelsk, ikke sant?
= You speak English, right?

Snakker du andre språk enn engelsk
? - Do you speak other languages than English

Det er lett
å snakke engelsk, men det er vanskelig å snakke norsk. – It is easy to speak English, but it is difficult to speak Norwegian.


Snakker dere norsk hjemme?Do you speak Norwegian at home?

Vanligvis snakker
(verb II place) vi norsk - Usually we speak Norwegian.

eller

Vi
snakker (verb II place) norsk hjemme – We speak Norwegian at home


Engelsk er forskjellig fra norsk
English is different from Norwegian.

Det er stor forskjell engelsk og norsk
= There is a big difference between English and Norwegian

- ingen årsak/Vaer så god = you are welcome (you reply when someone thanks you)
