Lesson 4c: ADJEKTIV Part II

It is worth to know some rules about adjectives:

  • Double consonant at the end of the adjective = single instead of double consonant in neuter
en grønn bil = a green car
ei grønn bok = a green book
*et grønt hus = a green house (instead of 
grønnt)

grønne gensere = green sweaters



  • Adjective ends in “er”, “el” or “en” = we remove ‘e’ & double consonant (if applicable) in plural form. 

a) “er”

en vakker morgen = a beautiful morning
ei vakker bok = a beautiful book
et vakkert smil = a beautiful smile

*vakre hus = 
beautiful houses (instead of vakkere)


en diger kopp = huge cup
ei  diger kake  = huge cake
et digert 
kakestykke = huge piece of cake

*digre fjell = huge mountains (instead of digere)


b) “el”
en gammel venn = an old friend
ei gammel bok = an old book
et gammelt hus = an old house

*gamle venner = old friends (instead of gammele)



c) “en”
en åpen  bil = an open car
ei åpen  bok = an open book
et åpent  hus = an open house

*åpne  dører = open doors (instead of åpene)


en sulten gutt = a hungry boy
*sultne gutter = hungry boys (instead of sultene)



  • Adjective ends in “m” = we add a consonant in plural 
en tom bil = an empty car
ei tom eske = an empty box
et tomt skap = an empty cupboard

*tomme skuffer = empty bins (instead of tome)




  • Adjective ends in “ig” or “sk” = neuter stays the same as masculine/feminine (i.e. do not add "t" at the end)
a) “ig”
en hyggelig  venn = a nice friend  
ei hyggelig bok = a nice book
*et hyggelig brev 
(no “t”) = a nice letter (instead of hyggeligt)


hyggelige venner = nice friends



*et koselig hus  (no “t”) = a cosy house  (instead of  koseligt)


b) “isk”

en økonomisk 
sak = an economic case    
ei økonomisk bok = an economic book
*et økonomisk problem = an economic problem 
(instead of økonomiskt)

økonomiske eksperter = economic experts


*et engelsbilde (no “t”) =  an english picture(photo/image) (instead of engelskt)


Exception: et ferskt brød (fresh bread); et friskt eple (fresh apple)


  • Adjective: “NY” = we add “tt” in neuter
en ny bil = a new car ei ny kåpe = a new coat
*et nytt hus = a new house 
(instead of  nyt)


nye gardiner = 
new curtains (sounds like a garden which would be: en ny hage)



  • Adjective: “BLÅ” = we add “tt” in neuter and remove "e" from plural

en blå bil = a blue car
ei blå kåpe = a blue coat
*et blått hus = a blue house 
(instead of  blåt)

*blå gensere = 
blue sweaters (instead of  blåe)



  • Adjective ends in “nde” = stays the same

en spennende følelse = an exciting feeling, emotion
ei spennende opplevelse/uke = an exciting experience/week
*et spennende live = an exciting life
(instead of spennendet


*spennende øyeblikk = exciting moments 
(instead of spennendee) 



  • Some more adj. stay the same 
en moderne bil = a modern car
ei moderne kåpe = a modern coat
*et moderne hus =a modern house (instead of modernet)

*moderne
gensere = modern sweaters(instead of modernee)


Others: Bra (good), sjalu (jealous), stille (quiet), stakkars (wretched), gratis (free)


  • Adjective ends in “t” preceded by consonant = do not receive “t” in neuter

Et svart skjerf = a black scarf (instead of svartt)

Et flott skap = a great cupboard (instead of flott)
